From Dubai International Airport (DXB), the Metro is a low-fare choice from Terminals 1 and 3 when trains are running and your hotel is near a station. A taxi suits late arrivals, heavy luggage and a direct hotel journey. A rental car makes more sense when the wider trip involves regular driving.
From the arrivals hall to the neighbourhood you came to see.
Dubai has several centres: the streets around Deira, Downtown's towers and the waterfront around Marina are different arrivals. A cheap train ride can be ideal for one hotel and leave an awkward final walk to another. The useful comparison ends at reception, with your bags beside you.
Three ways into the city
| Transport | Best fit | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | Station-side hotel; manageable luggage | Per person, by zones and ticket |
| Taxi | Direct arrival; late flight or family | Per vehicle, metered journey |
| Rental car | Several driving days | Hire period plus usage costs |
DXB, Terminal 2 and the other airport
DXB's Terminals 1 and 3 have Red Line stations. Terminal 2 has no direct Metro station; its arrivals bus stands and taxi rank provide onward options. Airport buses require a nol card rather than cash. DWC, also called Al Maktoum International, is a separate airport: reaching the Metro involves a bus or taxi connection, not a walk into a terminal station.
The Metro reaches the neighbourhood, then comes the hotel
At T1 or T3, Red Line trains towards Expo 2020 or Life Pharmacy run into the city; Centrepoint is the opposite direction. City Centre Deira and Al Rigga serve Deira. Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall is useful for Downtown; farther along, Sobha Realty and DMCC connect with the tram around Marina. A district's station is not necessarily beside your hotel.
That final stretch matters with suitcases in the heat. A short taxi connection can make a rail journey workable, although it adds another fare and a change of vehicle. RTA's S'hail planner helps compare the complete route to the hotel address.
A fare and a new card cost different amounts
RTA's Silver nol fares are AED 3 within one zone, AED 5 across two adjacent zones and AED 7.50 across more than two. A new Silver card costs AED 25, including AED 19 travel credit. For an occasional Metro journey, a Red ticket costs AED 2 plus a regular fare of AED 4, 6 or 8.50 for those zone bands. Airport station ticket offices and machines sell tickets.
Late landings change the choice
The regular station hours checked on 8 September 2026 are 05:00-midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 05:00-01:00 the following day on Friday, and 08:00-midnight on Sunday. All times are Dubai local time. These opening windows are not the last departure from each airport station; holiday schedules can also differ.
A flight's landing time comes before baggage collection and the walk to the platform. Near closing, a train connection needs its own timetable check. Outside Metro hours, the airport's round-the-clock taxi ranks offer a simpler arrival.
A taxi takes the luggage all the way
Official taxi ranks serve every DXB terminal, 24 hours a day. The fare covers the vehicle, making it a different calculation for companions sharing a ride. Distance, waiting and applicable tolls affect the total; an airport starting charge is not the price to Downtown or Marina.
The official pages currently differ: Dubai Airports quotes an AED 25 starting fare, while RTA lists AED 20 for a normal airport taxi and AED 25 for a van. The current tariff at the rank needs confirmation. App-booked rides have their own quoted prices and signed pickup points.
For children, Dubai Taxi Company's FAQ says a baby seat can be requested from the airport taxi organiser. That does not confirm immediate availability or the right fit for your child; a suitable restraint needs confirmation before boarding.
A rental decision belongs to the whole stay
Dubai Airports lists car-hire operators by terminal. Collection is useful when the next days already involve driving; it also adds paperwork and a vehicle handover after the flight. For a city break near public transport, arrival by taxi or Metro leaves the option of renting later. Hotel parking, fuel, tolls and the full rental quote belong in that comparison. The reservation determines the collection point and desk hours.

Questions people ask
Can I take suitcases on the Metro?
RTA permits one large suitcase up to 81 x 58 x 30 cm and one small suitcase up to 55 x 38 x 20 cm per passenger, stowed in the luggage area.
How long does Dubai airport to city take?
There is no single city-centre transfer time. Terminal, hotel, traffic and connections change the journey. A route estimate starts from a particular departure point; landing-to-hotel time also includes getting through arrivals.
Opening hours, prices and entry rules change. Confirm with the venue before you set off.
