Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is on the second floor of Palm Jumeirah Mall, formerly Nakheel Mall. This Dubai branch serves table-grill yakiniku; my visit featured the Shogun presentation, beef with tare and rice, and choregi salad.
Looking for Gyu-Kaku in Dubai? The restaurant is on the second floor of Palm Jumeirah Mall, the mall formerly known as Nakheel Mall. It is a Japanese table-grill BBQ restaurant where diners cook their own meat at the table.
My visit centred on the Shogun presentation, grilled beef with tare and white rice, and choregi salad. Below, I share what the meal was like, what I would order, and the details to check before you go.
A familiar Japanese name, a meal around the grill
Gyu-Kaku is a popular yakiniku chain in Japan. For someone who knows it from Japan, seeing that name in Dubai is part of the attraction. For someone new to it, think of a restaurant where grilling is part of the meal, rather than something that happens out of sight in the kitchen.
The table grill changes the pace. You can cook a few pieces, eat them while they are hot, then move on to the next round. I would choose this for the experience of sitting around a grill as much as for a particular plate of beef. It is a different kind of evening from ordering a finished steak.

Shogun: the centrepiece of the table
The Shogun presentation is the one to recognise in these photos: a tiered wooden display with different pieces of meat arranged across it, with prawns alongside. It gives the table a sense of occasion before anything goes on the grill.
That is the presentation from my visit, not a guarantee of today's exact selection. If Shogun is what you want to order, ask the restaurant what the current set contains and how many people it is intended to serve. The photograph is useful for showing what caught my attention; it should not replace the current menu.

The Japanese way I enjoy it: grill, tare, white rice
My recommendation is to keep the combination simple. Cook the meat properly, dip it in tare, the dipping sauce, and eat it with plain white rice. For me, that combination is central to enjoying yakiniku. The rice is not an afterthought: it is what I want alongside the grilled meat and sauce.
This is my preferred way to eat it, not a rule that every diner has to follow. With different cuts and thicknesses on the table, ask the staff about cooking each one rather than treating every piece the same.
I also enjoyed the Korean-style choregi salad. It is worth looking beyond the meat when ordering: a salad and rice make the meal feel more complete, and give you something different between rounds from the grill.

What should you budget?
I remember spending roughly AED 250 per person. Treat that as an approximate recollection of my meal, not a verified current price or a quoted price for Shogun. Your bill will depend on the dishes, quantities and drinks you choose.
Before committing to a set, check its total price, intended number of diners and whether rice and sides are included. A per-person spending estimate and the price of a shared platter are not the same thing. Menus from Gyu-Kaku branches in other countries should not be used to budget for this Dubai restaurant.
Finding Gyu-Kaku in Palm Jumeirah Mall
The mall's official Gyu-Kaku listing places the restaurant on the second floor and gives the contact number +971 56 791 3812. Use Palm Jumeirah Mall as your destination; Nakheel Mall is the former name of the same mall, not a second branch.
Call ahead for current restaurant hours, availability and the latest dine-in menu, especially if you are travelling specifically for Shogun. The official listing currently displays conflicting hours, so I would confirm with the restaurant instead of relying on a single time here.
Who I would recommend it to
If you want to try Japanese food beyond sushi and ramen, this is a straightforward introduction to a different side of eating out in Japan. If you already know yakiniku, the draw is more familiar: a table grill, meat, tare and white rice, here in Dubai.
I would put it on the list for a meal with friends or for someone who enjoys food as an activity. If you just want something served ready to eat, the table-grill format may not be what you are looking for. Go for Japanese BBQ culture, not only for the photograph of the platter.
This account combines my own meal and photographs with location information checked on 17 September 2026. The AED 250 figure is an approximate personal recollection; the current Shogun price and contents have not been independently confirmed.
