Sphere Abu Dhabi is a planned immersive entertainment venue on Yas Island, between Yas Mall and SeaWorld. Announced in October 2024, it has a construction completion target of late 2029, not a confirmed opening date.
Sphere is coming to Abu Dhabi. But the story did not start with the latest Yas Island headlines: the original announcement was made in October 2024. Since then, the project has moved from an initial partnership announcement to a franchise agreement and a named site.
Here is a closer look at the experience being planned, who is responsible for it, and what is still too early to put in a travel itinerary.
It was announced back in October 2024
On 15 October 2024, Sphere Entertainment and the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced plans for an Abu Dhabi venue. That was the first announcement, rather than an opening or the confirmation of a precise site.
I hadn't realised it had already been announced in October 2024. This is a really good video, too.
The next contractual milestone came on 25 July 2025, when the parties entered into definitive franchise and development agreements. On 14 May 2026, the public update identified the Yas Island site. These are three different milestones, not three competing announcement dates.
What will the experience be like?
Think beyond a conventional cinema screen. At the existing Las Vegas Sphere, the image curves over and behind the audience, making the surroundings part of what you watch. Sphere's technology overview describes a 160,000-square-foot interior LED display and 16K imagery. Those are Las Vegas specifications, not a final technical specification sheet for Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi programme is planned around three formats:
- Immersive productions: multisensory Sphere Experiences.
- Concert residencies: performances designed for the venue.
- Major events: configurations for occasions such as sports, conferences and brand launches.
Plans also include Emirati cultural storytelling and Emirati artists on the exterior LED surface, known as the Exosphere. These are announced directions, not a released show calendar. Read the official programme announcement.

The useful distinction is between the format and the lineup. Las Vegas shows what the format can make possible. It does not tell us which artists or productions will be bookable in Abu Dhabi.
Where exactly will Sphere Abu Dhabi be?
The announced site is on Yas Island, between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. That is more specific than simply saying “Abu Dhabi”, and places it within the island's existing leisure district. The May 2026 announcement identifies the plot, but does not provide a visitor entrance or a parking plan.
For now, use those two landmarks to understand the area, rather than treating a map pin as an operational destination. It is a future venue: there is not yet a Sphere outing to book or an entrance to navigate to.
Explore the Yas Mall and SeaWorld area on Google Maps. This is an area search, not an official Sphere entrance pin.
Who is behind Sphere Abu Dhabi?
There are two distinct roles here. DCT Abu Dhabi is the local project partner; Sphere Entertainment brings the Sphere brand, technology and content framework.
The July 2025 SEC filing gives DCT the exclusive right to build and operate the Abu Dhabi venue under a franchise arrangement. Sphere licenses its intellectual property and provides development and pre-opening services. The initial franchise term is 25 years from opening.
So “operated by the company behind Las Vegas” would be an oversimplification. This is a local build-and-operate arrangement using Sphere's platform. The filing also envisaged a later operational-services agreement; it should not be read as a complete list of the eventual day-to-day operating responsibilities.
When will it open, and can you buy tickets?
The official target is construction completion by the end of 2029. That is not the same as an announced first public show. The project has a stated construction-phase cost of US$1.7 billion and planned capacity of up to 20,000, depending on the event configuration. Source: Abu Dhabi Media Office.
The announcements reviewed do not provide a confirmed opening day, ticket prices or an on-sale date. Until those are released, it is better to treat Sphere as something to follow, rather than a reason to book a particular travel date.
The next useful updates: opening dates, the first shows, booking channels and practical access information. Those will turn the project from an eye-catching announcement into something you can actually plan a visit around.
This is an announcement-based guide, not a personal visit review. Original announcement (2024); franchise filing (2025); location and construction update (2026); Las Vegas technology reference.
